Patient Prevention

Research into the area of disease and injury prevention has allowed the average human being to live a longer and fuller life. The research performed in the last century has obliterated diseases, improved diagnostics and created new medications to treat illnesses. Without medical research, our lives would be much less rich. While doctors continual educate themselves on the latest technology and research, it is important for each patient to use resources like tatoomcity.org to understand how illness and disease prevention can be implemented into their daily life.

Eat Well

Research, shows that eating a healthy and well-balanced diet is one of the key factors in preventing illness and disease. Making simple changes to your diet can help you prevent heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and other illnesses. Even better, you will avoid all of the complications these illnesses can cause. Consider using the food pyramid to help build a better diet.

Exercise Well

While it may be hard to find the time to exercise on a regular basis, those who do live healthier and longer lives. It isn’t necessary to run a marathon each week, instead, consider walking for 20 minutes three times a week or taking a yoga class. Any kind of movement can help you lead a healthier life.

Sleep Well

As our lives have become busier, we have found extra time by cutting into our sleep time. Those who don’t sleep enough are susceptible to depression, the common cold, and may not heal as well. By simply taking the time to sleep seven to eight hours each night, you can help keep your body healthy.

Elder Abuse Is on the Rise

If you live in a major city, you may have seen billboards that address the issue of elder abuse. This problem has not been often discussed until recently. However, researchers and advocates have found it to be a growing problem.

Nursing homes have been among the most criticized institutions where abuse occurs. In 2005, one study estimated that there are over 2 million cases of elder abuse every year. This same study also estimated that one of every five cases of elder abuse will not be reported.

While family members can also perpetrate abuse, a significant portion comes from nursing homes. As several studies and at least one elder abuse lawyer Los Angeles has reported, many of these cases of neglect or abuse stem from understaffed and poorly trained institutions.

Common forms of abuse in an institution are failure to read a patient’s chart correctly, failure to notify a doctor when the patient’s condition changes, and errors in administering prescriptions. Common signs of abuse are dehydration, malnutrition, and bed sores. In domestic cases, abuse can be outright physical or sexual. In other situations, abuse can involve neglect including failure to feed or bathe a patient.

Caring for an elderly person takes patience, strength, and understanding. These are people who used to be able to do everything for themselves but now find themselves at the mercy of others. They can be frustrated at their situation, or they may become easily confused. This knowledge is a part of the caregivers’ job. We must find a way to provide excellent care for patients without the change for negligence, or abuse.

What to Expect at Childbirth Education Classes

Pull up a pillow and let’s get started; grab one for your partner too. These are the two essential “bring-alongs” to childbirth classes. The delivery is still a few weeks away, and it’s time to learn what to expect when the big event arrives. How the baby comes into world is a decision, for the most part, that the parents make.

If you have chosen to bring your baby into this world naturally, you and your partner will attend birth classes. In keeping you pregnancy calendar, you should start birth classes just about eight to ten weeks before the birth of the baby. Birth classes are usually conducted by a nurse midwife or other nurse instructor with a degree and lots of experience with childbirth.

The childbirth classes are designed to help the mother deal with the pain and stress of labor. While some labors are extremely quick, the majority of women giving birth endure hours of labor, and labor is painful. By the time you see your little miracle, you will probably be exhausted. The instructor will give you ways to deal with the pain, such as yoga and meditation, to help you when the pain comes.

You will learn different positions of sitting and laying to take the pressure off certain parts of your body. Your partner will learn how to help you through all of it, mostly with reassurance and love, as well as some massaging techniques that can help.

However you choose to bring your baby into the world, the birth experience is better shared when prepared.

Does Your Doctor Treat You Like A Machine? A Cold Approach Is Not A Good Thing

WASHINGTON - OCTOBER 01: Doctors participate ...

Doctors and medical experts have to develop for certain level of clinical detachment from their patients to diagnose the problem properly. A doctor who is overly involved in the emotional aspects of the disease may find it difficult to treat the patient properly. However, this does not mean your doctor should be a coldhearted individual who has absolutely no regard for your emotions and feelings.

Striking the right balance between clinical detachment and a sympathetic approach is a difficult thing. Not all doctors have the knack of getting this right immediately. In such a scenario, you should not hesitate to talk to your doctor and request him or her to ease up a bit. Many doctors conclude that keeping the patient out of the information loop is the best way to reduce complications. Such doctors prescribe medicines and do not bother with anything else.

Rather than treating the patient like a human being, doctors begin to treat the patient like a machine requiring maintenance. This can be very stressful for the family members and the patient being treated by the doctor.

You may find it difficult to transform the medical community on your own. However, you should log onto the internet and contact others who feel the same about their doctors. You will discover that many professionals are caring without compromising on ethics and professionalism.

Some thing is fundamentally wrong with the way you are being treated if you find your frequent visits to the doctors to be more stressful than the illness itself. Do not hesitate to look beyond your standard choice to enjoy friendlier diagnosis and treatment.

Real Viagra is Your Friend

Viagra is a little pill that helps men who have difficulty in achieving and maintaining erections naturally.  The drug interacts with a man’s blood vessels in such a way that they become dilated, which allows more blood to flow into the penis, thus engorging it. Opening up the blood vessels too much or for too long, however, can be a serious health hazard.

Of course, there are going to be dangers to anyone who takes a drug that alters the way the blood flows through the body, and those dangers are going to be even more severe to a man who is already stricken with health problems. Despite this, many men and their doctors feel that it is worth the risk of side effects to take a drug like Viagra.

Many spam websites claim to be selling authentic Viagra, and, unfortunately, some men will purchase the drug from these sites because they don’t want to have a conversation with their doctor about the problem.  If you are planning to buy Viagra online, be cautious of websites that aren’t selling authentic Viagra. Before ordering, research the website to ensure it is not known as a spammy site. A reputable site will advise you to consult with your doctor before buying any type of medication.

Psychological Dependence and Addiction

Drug addiction does not typically involve only emotional or physical dependence, but both simultaneously. Sometimes the drug will begin with the emotional or psychological dependence, because taking the drug makes you feel good and you want to continue to feel good in that way. Otherwise, the physical aspects of the addiction hit more quickly, and you actually feel yourself going through cravings and withdrawals when you do not have enough of the drug in your system. It quickly spirals out of control, and before you know it, your body is both emotionally and physically demanding the drug so that you can feel better.

Addiction becomes worse with time. It becomes more serious, more powerful, until you are all but incapable of getting the help that you need all by yourself. This is why so few people actually take charge and overcome their addictions individually. Instead, the existence of MichaelsHouse.com and other rehabilitation facilities has become vitally essential in making sure that people can kick their habits and truly get help.

Drugs mess with the chemical signals in your brain so that you think you need the drug in order to get by. You will need the drug in greater and greater quantities just to be able to cope with life, until the point where the drug addiction is ruining your life. Drug addiction can cost you your job, your family members, your friends, your health, your loved ones and your life. Do you want to spend all your money and lose everyone you love due to a drug addiction, or do you want to reach out and ask for help from professionals that know what they are doing? A little bit of true professional help can really go a long way in making sure that you are able to overcome your addiction so that you may be able to move on with your life and shed your physical and psychological addiction.

Too Much Radiation?

A debate is going on in the medical community regarding the extent patients are exposed to radiation. With sophisticated, highly detailed images from CT, mammography units, PET scanners and X-ray machines, and with the upgrade to digital technology and faster speeds, doctors are ordering more radiology tests than ever before.

As a patient, you need to be aware of the different issues and ultimately decide for yourself if you want to undergo a radiographic test.

First of all, today’s sophisticated machines enable physicans to view structures, tissues, organs and body functions to help them determine your condition and disease state. In the recent past, doctors had to rely on lab tests, physical assessments, patient complaints and exploratory surgery to figure out what was wrong. Now, the patient lies on a table and goes through a tube, and highly detailed images are obtained without breaking the skin.

The latest technology produces digital images that are viewed on a computer monitor in stunning detail. The physician can zoom in and out, adjust the contrast and get an amazing amount of information to diagnose and treat the patient. Some systems even have a “red flag” program that compares the image to its database and points out anything that looks abnormal. This is an extra safety measure in case a physician misses something or needs to review an area more carefully.

The problem can be that docs may rely too much on radiological images and order them too frequently.

Hospitals and physician practices may have spent millions to purchase the latest machines, and they need a lot of tests done in order to recoup their investment.

With medical malpractice suits on the rise, physicians may order radiographic tests to demonstrate they used every available means to diagnose and treat a problem.

Patients should question whether a radiographic test is necessary. There may be lab tests or other screenings that don’t use radiation that would still provide the necessary information.

ICU 101

Intensive care units (ICU) were developed to provide the skilled and moment-to-moment care needed by critically ill patients. Years ago, equipment was brought to the patient’s room when needed. However, it became clear that having a specialized unit with a full array of resources, equipment and elite nurses provided better care and improved outcomes.

Although most full- service hospitals have a general ICU, those with more specialized services may have specific critical care units for special needs, such as for heart surgery patients, trauma or burn patients, newborns, pediatric patients, neurosurgery patients and surgical patients.

Nurses in the ICU are specially trained to observe patients carefully and pick up on any changes in status. Patients can be in such a fragile state that a sudden change, however slight, can mean life or death and require immediate medical intervention. The nurses also are trained in working with the many complex machines, devices and medicines used to treat the very ill.

Recently, a new specialty has emerged called intensivists. These are physicians trained in internal medicine, pulmonology, cardiology, nephrology, infectious disease, endocrinology, anesthesiology or surgery who may receive additional certification in critical care. Others become intensivists by focusing their practice mostly on ICU patients. Some hospitals employ these physicians to work full time overseeing patients in the ICU.

To loved ones, the ICU can be very intimidating. Patients are hooked up to an array of tubes, machines and monitors. The patient may be sedated or barely conscious, and they may appear swollen and their skin may look pale or ashen. Common equipment that is used includes a ventilator to assist the patient with breathing, a catheter inserted to drain urine and other drainage tubes, a heart monitor and other monitoring devices, and lines inserted to deliver fluids and medications.

Patients in the ICU receive excellent, personalized care. Most improve rapidly and are able to transfer to a step down unit, recover and go home.

Offers.com Helps you Find Christmas Presents!

Traditional envelope containing money as a gif...

Many people have just started their shopping for Christmas, while others have been done for a while. I’m kind of in the middle. Some of my shopping is done, while the rest – well, to be honest, I have no idea what to get for the rest of the people on my list. I’ve been trying to think of what they would like, but sometimes it is really hard to come up with the right present.

One thing that I have started doing is to look at online deals to see what there is. I figure that maybe this will spark something, and I’ll be able to make a great decision! One of my favorites is to head to Offers.com. I can find discounts and coupons to make my purchases even cheaper than normal. Plus, being able to go through these coupons helps me get an idea of what is out there.

I have found, though, that this is also a great time waster. Going through all these coupons gets me looking at things that I probably wouldn’t get as a Christmas present for anyone. Also, I end up looking at items that I would love to buy for myself! It definitely has the potential to cost me a lot of money. There are things on there that I would never have even thought about. But once you see a great deal, you can’t just unsee it. It takes a lot of willpower to not go ahead and buy everything that I see and like.

Christmas shopping is stressful for almost everyone. But being able to find the perfect item discounted or with a coupon is a great way to do your shopping. This is why I love shopping on the Internet so much. There are things that you can find that you never would have found in a regular old store!

Summer Heat Can Take a Toll

A seizure can occur in small children with fev...
Image via Wikipedia

Every summer, at least one overly hot and humid stretch hits the country causing news anchors and meteorologists to launch into warning mode. Heat advisories and extreme heat warnings should not be taken lightly, but unfortunately every summer dozens of Americans die from heat exposure. More people lose their lives to heat exposure than all other natural disasters put together, even taking into account lives lost in tornadoes and hurricanes. While most heat related deaths occur in the elderly and the very young, people of every age are susceptible.

The least worrisome of all heat-related illnesses is heat rash which occurs in areas of the body that sweat the most. Tiny, red, pimply bumps aren’t cause for too much concern and most commonly affect young children. Anyone who’s over-exerted themselves in the heat is likely to have experienced heat cramps. Painful muscle spasms are accompanied by sweaty, pale skin that is still cool. A person experiencing heat cramps will have a normal temperature.

Heat syncope is a fancy term for dizziness or fainting due to heat exposure. This usually happens when a person works out in the heat. Skin remains sweaty and pale and an elevated temperature is unlikely. A more serious heat-related illness is heat exhaustion, or nature’s alarm warning of overheating. Elderly folk, people who work outside, and people with other health issues like diabetes or high blood pressure are at a higher risk for succumbing to heat exhaustion. Someone who appears overly clumsy, extremely sweaty, thirsty, scatterbrained, and weak is likely suffering from heat exhaustion. As with other heat-related illnesses, body temperature remains normal, but an elevated heart rate is common.

The most serious and most dangerous heat-related illness is heat stroke. This potentially fatal condition occurs when a person’s body can no longer cool itself, often times resulting in death; medical attention is vital to survival at the first sign of symptoms. High fever is accompanied by confusion, strange behavior, dizziness, racing pulse, and zero sweat. It’s very important to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat-related illness to stay safe and healthy every summer.
